Males and females exhibit different forms of baldness patterns. Female pattern of baldness is associated with hormonal changes and aging. In certain cases genetic factors also control baldness patterns, especially among African women. On an average a hair grows at the rate of about half an inch per month and grows for two to six years and then falls out. A new hair normally replaces the old hair.
Hair loss occurs when a new hair doesn’t grow in the place of the old hair. Unfortunately the reasons for female baldness is not well understood, though certain factors responsible for baldness in females have been identified.
Pattern Of Baldness In Women
There are several factors that have been identified to be closely associated with female baldness,
- Hair loss with increasing age is inevitable.
- Hormonal level changes have also been found to be responsible for hair loss in women. Higher levels of androgen, especially post menopause result in thinner hair on the head and result in hair loss.
- Thyroid disorders, more frequently observed in females, are also considered to be responsible for female baldness.
- Iron or vitamin deficiency (biotin) has been closely linked with hair loss and baldness in women.
- Certain medications like beta blockers and chemotherapy drugs are responsible for female baldness.
- Certain women may complain on shedding of hair following a major surgery, chronic illness or pregnancy. These conditions are often associated with deficiency of vitamins and nutrients and hence cause hair loss.
The features of female pattern of balding include,
- Hair located on the top of the scalp tends to become thin and start widening in the center.
- The front hairline remains unchanged.
- Hair loss in women is rarely associated with complete baldness, though it may progress to a state of scanty hair on the scalp.
Treatment For Female Pattern Baldness
The treatment should be focused towards dealing with the underlying problem,
- Vitamin and iron supplements are crucial. Improve your diet and include fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. Include foods like prunes, spinach, etc. in your diet, as these foods are rich in Iron and Vitamins.
- Following menopause include foods that contain phytoestrogens in your diet. Soy is considered to be a great source of phytoestrogens. These foods would control the levels of androgen and prevent balding after menopause.
- Local application of coconut oil with a few drops of tea tree oil is considered beneficial. Tea tree oil helps in effective management of dandruff (a cause of hair loss) while coconut oil moisturizes the scalp and keeps it healthy. Wash off the application within an hour with cold water.
Homeopathic remedies like Sepia and Pulsatilla are considered very beneficial in the management of hair loss especially in women.
Floric Acid and Graphitis are other homeopathic drugs that improve scalp health and thereby reduce hair loss in females.
