Alopecia Areata Treatment | Bald Spot Symptoms, Home Remedies

Question:

Sir my question is that I have alopecia areata on the scalp. What is the treatment?

Answer:

Small round bald patches on the scalp are called alopecia areata. These small patches of hair loss can revert to normal on its own in a short period, or it may take few years to recover. The disease is some time also called spot baldness.

Prevalence of this disease is common in young adults although elderly person can also be affected. It occurs in both sexes.

Alopecia Areata Symptoms, Remedy

The bald spot on head is of a coin size in the beginning which is accidently detected by a person while combing hairs.

In the beginning there may be one spot, but later few other bald spots can appear. The more common site of this disease is scalp, it can also occur on beards, eye brows. Usually there is no other symptom associated with alopecia areata except itching on the affected part in few cases.

The cause is not known, it is believed to be related to the body’s change in the immune system.

Treatment: alopecia areata is a self limiting disease, the recovery of the hair loss in the bald patch may be fast or slow, but is sure to occur.

The hair of the bald patch may not be of the original texture in some cases. As it is an autoimmune disease, the body will itself react to bring back the condition to normal.

Some home remedies can be tried:

  • Take food rich in vitamin A and C or take it in substitute form of tablets. The antioxidant properties of vitamin A help in producing healthy sebum on the scalp. Food rich in vitamin A are fish, cod liver oil, milk, meat, cabbage, broccoli, spinach.
  • Citrus fruits contain vitamin C which is another antioxidant.
  • Essential oils for alopecia: Essential oils of thyme, rosemary and cedarwood can be applied on the scalp by mixing them with jojoba oil.
  • Onion juice can be applied on the affected region; regrowth of hairs is faster in such patients.

The person has to keep anxiety and depression under control. Assurance of the condition returning to normal will help the person to relieve his stress.

I have alopecia areata. My doctor has asked me to apply “Folifast hair tincture”. I am also taking some vitamin tablets with it. I can’t see any improvements. Hair fall has not stopped and the spots are getting bigger and bigger. Is there a way to stop the hair loss?

Keep patience, you will have hair growth in bald patches, it depends on individual susceptibility in auto-immune conditions. For some it may take 3 months or for some hair growth starts after 2 years. Meanwhile along with your medicine, try homeopathic medicines in consultation with a homeopath.
