What Is Walking Pneumonia?

Walking pneumonia is a health condition suffered by almost 2 million Americans every year. Its prevalence is mainly due to its contagious characteristic wherein the microbes are transferred through respiratory secretions or having close contact with an infected person. The common walking pneumonia causes are infection by transmitting or acquiring of the mycoplasma pneumoniae organism that includes bacteria or viruses and from chemical substances.

What Are the Symptoms of Walking Pneumonia?

The walking pneumonia symptoms normally manifest between 1 to 3 weeks after exposure from the microorganism. Its usual symptoms include the following:

• Loss in energy or lethargy
• Exhaustion
• Severe cold accompanied with runny nose
• Mild to severe headache
• Chills
• Throat problems due to cough

Although the symptoms of walking pneumonia are similar to pneumonia, the main difference between pneumonia and walking pneumonia is that walking pneumonia  does not require the infected person to stay in bed nor hospitalization, he can still move about doing his usual things and he is sent home by doctors and considered an outpatient.

Natural Treatment for Walking Pneumonia

A person with walking pneumonia may not be required to get hospitalized but to treat his condition he must strictly follow the doctor’s prescription and medical advices. Since a person is generally sent home after treatment, his total recovery would rely on what he would do after being sent home.

Primarily, a person with walking pneumonia should eat healthy and a balanced diet to boost his immune system and to bring back his lost energy. Taking lots of fluids will also help in treating cold and cough and to cure other symptoms such as throat problems and runny nose.

Taking a good rest will also do an infected person good.  To prevent getting infected with walking pneumonia, it would be better to take precautionary measures such as frequently washing the hands and avoid getting close contact with infected people.
