Question: What causes uncontrollable urine loss?
Answer:
- Loss of control of the bladder results in urinary incontinence. This may result in mild leaking of urine to uncontrollable wetting. Urine Incontinence of five major types,
- Stress incontinence: occurs when the muscles of the urethra become weak and cant hold urine as the pressure of the urine in the bladder is high
- Urge Incontinence: occurs when the bladder is overactive. Leakage happens because the muscles of the bladder contract too often not allowing the bladder to hold urine
- Mixed Incontinence: A combination of stress incontinence ( weakness of urethral muscles) and urge incontinence ( an overactive bladder)
- Overflow incontinence: occurs when the bladder doesn’t completely empty.The residual urine constantly keeps dripping. In such situation the bladder muscles are weak or the urethra is obstructed
- Functional Incontinence: occurs when a person can’t get to the toilet due to other health problems resulted in restricted movements.
Causes of urinary incontinence:
- Urinary Tract Infections
- Weakening of pelvic muscles due to childbirth, aging, prolapse, pelvic surgery etc
- Neuromuscular disorders caused due to diabetes, stroke or multiple sclerosis
- Medications like diuretics may also cause incontinence
- Psychological anxiety/ apprehension and fear are common cause among children
- Urinary tract abnormalities like fistula, etc
- Advanced stages of pelvic cancers/ tumors
