Natural Treatment for Kidney Stone | Removal Surgery for Kidney Stone

Treatment of Kidney Stones:

Treatment for relieving pain- provided the urine is sterile, most small calculi will pass naturally. This may take many months. Large quantity of fluid should be drunk and short courses of anti-spasmodic drugs may help. Progresses of stone are observed by plain X-rays every 6-8wks.

Surgical intervention may be required if-

  • Repeated attacks of colic produce no advances of the stone.
  • The stone is enlarging but not moving.
  • Complete obstruction of the kidney occurs.
  • The urine is infected.
  • The stone when first seen is thought to be too large to pass.

Operative Procedures for Kidney Stone:

  • Percutaneous methods: Development of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and ureteroscopy (URS) have changed the treatment of stones to the extent that open surgery is required less than 1-2% of cases.
Sterile urine is desirable prior to any stone treatment.
  • Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL): It was first described in 1976, PCNL is a technique which allows safely and reliably the removal of stones from pelvi-calyceal system and upper ureter. The later development of the ESWL has considerably decreased its use.
  • ESWL: In this technique the stone is removed with shock wave without the need for instrumental penetration of the body. The stone in the kidney is fragmented by repeated shock waves which are focused towards the kidney stone. The fragments are made so small that they are automatically passed through the urine.
In some instances urethroscope is required to remove the fragments.
  • Pyelolithotomy: It is indicated when a stone lies in renal pelvis.
  • Nephrolithotomy is indicated:
  1. When a calculi lie within an intra-renal pelvis or because of the adhesions due to a previous operation.
  2. When the calculi can be palpated through the cortex.
  3. When there is branched calculus and the state of the opposite kidney precludes nephrectomy.
  • Pyelonephrolithotomy: Is used to remove calculi situated deeply in a calyx.
  • Partial nephrectomy: When the stone is in the lower most calyxes and there is considerable damage to the calyx.
  • Nephrectomy: It is indicated when the contra-lateral kidney is perfectly normal and the stone or stones have destroyed much or the renal parenchyma.

Home Remedies for Kidney Stone:

  • Urinary symptoms like burning while urination and decreased flow of urine can be checked with coconut water. It helps neutralize the urine and thus reduces the burning and pain associated with it. One should make a habit to take at least one coconut water every day. This helps flush out the calculi and dissolves small particles of stones if any.
  • Barley seeds approximately 15-20 in number should be added to a liter of water and boiled. Water should be strained and this liquid should be consumed two times in a day. This helps flush out the stones from the renal system.
  • Watermelon- Water the main content of this fruit which helps in flushing down the stone if any. Potassium is another content present in this fruit. Watermelon has diuretic properties and is helpful in kidney stone removal.
  • Onion decoction- Decoction is made by adding onion bulb pulps to 100ml of water. Boil this water till the quantity is reduced to 50ml. one can add sugar for taste.
  • After meals one should take soda-water. Three times in a day.

Yoga:

  • Certain ‘asana’, which help in removal of renal calculi, can be practiced.
  • These are ‘pavana mukta asana’ and ‘uttana padasana’.
