Weight is a very relative term. It depends on many parameters – height, gender, age, occupation, illness. A person is regarded as moderately under weight if he is 10% below his ideal body weight. And he is regarded as severely under weight, if he is 20% below his ideal body weight.

What is your height? Is the thinness affecting you physically? Do you feel tired or weary?

Approximately, for your age group, the range of weight that will be ideal is 50-55kgs.

Ways to put on weight:

  • The important thing to remember is to put on weight the scientific way. Do not pile on unnecessary kilos, by consuming foods that have no nutrient value.
  • Eat right. Do not eat too much off fatty and greasy food, which you might have to shed later on.
  • Maintain a diary of what you eat and when you eat for a period of 3 months.

I am turning 19 years old this year. I am 153cm tall and weigh 37kg and Asian. My weight is not constant, it would be 37kg early morning and after I eat it would be like 38 or 39kg and after a while it returns to 37kg. I have tried eating a lot, and I am quite an active person but I don’t exercise excessively. But why I still don’t gain weight? I am ashamed by my body and my chest size. Please give some remedy.

  4. Are your feeling weak? Do you have any other problems you think you may have because of your weight? Or are you just worried that you look thin? If you are healthy and strong, I do no think you should try to put on weight. Thats the way nature has planned for you. Why do you want to make changes to your body when you are absolutely fit?

Ideally, the body weight for a 26 year old would be between 50 kg to 55 kg. so, you are not severely under weight, unless your height is considerable.
To calculate the ideal body weight, send in your height.
Also, if your activity level is high and you have a high BMR, you could be burning lots of calories.

    Dietary management

    - Increase your protein intake. Foods that provide good quality proteins are – egg whites, fish, lean meat, pulses and legumes, and soy. Proteins help build muscles and help you put on lean mass.
    - Dry fruits like raisins, dry figs, dried prunes, and dates are wonderful foods for weight gain. They are also strength foods. Mixed with milk or yogurt, they are a brilliant combination.
    - Mangoes, bananas and chickoos also help in weight gain.

    Beware!
Do not resort to protein shakes, health drinks, and foods that promise weight gain. They do more harm than good. Stick to natural foods.

Ideally weight is proportional to the height. If you are healthy and are gong about your daily tasks without any trouble, then you are fine, really. Unless you feel weak, lethargic, fatigued all the time, I don’t think you need to worry about your weight just for cosmetic (appearance) reasons. But if you still want to put on weight here are a few things you can try.

Your weight is less compared to your height, you can add about 10-15 kg more. Increasing your weight, should be in most scientific way. Carbohydrates, proteins and fats should be consumed in right proportion. Intake of foods like cereals, legumes, dry fruits, bananas, mangoes, milk, fish, egg whites. These food are a rich source of carbohydrates, fats and proteins and will help you to put on weight.

Again, make sure you do not overdo anything that you may regret later (you may be desperate to lose weight after you gain so much!). Check with your local physician also before you start eating away! make sure that you do not put in just pure fat, but start to build muscle. This is something that you will need professional guidance for.
