Question: My 4 year son’s urine is yellow in color and he’s not having food. Is this a symptom of jaundice?
Answer
What is jaundice?
Jaundice is a symptom, not a disease. It is characterized by yellow discoloration of the sclera (white of the eyes), skin and occasionally nails.
The yellow discoloration occurs due to an increase in the pigment bilirubin, above the normal level.
Jaundice signifies a liver disorder; it could be a bile duct obstruction or a malfunctioning liver or hepatitis.
Symptoms of Jaundice:
- Yellow discoloration
- Bright yellow urine
- White pasty stools
- Loss of appetite
- Severe weakness
- Pain in the abdomen
- Headache
- Fever
What exactly are his symptoms? Does he have any of the above mentioned symptoms?
Investigations to be done:
Serum Bilirubin
SGOT, SGPT
These will help us reach a diagnosis
Treatment and Diet of Jaundice:
- Uncomplicated jaundice can be checked through diet alone.
- On waking – consume 1 tall glass of lime water. Lime protects the hepatocytes or liver cells and prevents further damage.
- Mid morning – consume coconut water.
- All fats – cream, butter, oils, and margarine should be avoided for 3 weeks.
- Foods that ferment should not be eaten.
- Foods that putrefy (pulses) should not be eaten.
- Consume lots of fresh fruits.
- Alternate hot and cold applications to the abdomen will relieve pain and quicken the cure.

My son is now 7 years old. He is showing signs of jaundice like high fever, headache, paleness of the skin, pain in the abdomen. Actually he had suffered from jaundice earlier exactly 2 years ago. Now, I am afraid if he is having a more serious problem. Also, he was having a low hemoglobin level and a low RBC count.
Your brother is definitely having hepatitis. To have bilirubin count 16 is definitely high. But simultaneously, other investigation like SGPT,SGOT, srProtien, other liver profile tests will help in the prognosis of the condition of your brother.
Some times in hepatitis A serum bilirubin increases to this level, in acute condition, which gradually becomes reduces after some time.
