Migraine Headache Causes and Treatments:
Migraine headache will tend to start on one side and then it may or may not spread on both the sides of head, last 4-72hrs and usually be severe (but may be mild). Migraine headache has to be differentiated from tension headache (will be on both sides and last for 2 hrs or so) and cluster headache (will be only on one side of the head and last for 30-90mins at a time).
Migraines will be accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to sound, light or smells; this will produce red and or watery or running nose. These symptoms will not appear in tension or cluster headache. This usually occurs between 10-30yrs of age group.
Food allergies are frequently the cause. Other very common factors are food allergy, low blood sugar, tension, depression, water retention, menstruation, changes in barometric pressure, malfunction of liver, sleep deprivation or even excess sleep, sudden change in emotions, hormonal imbalance or changes, sun rays, flash of lights, no exercise and dental problems.
Preventing Migraine Headache:
- Avoid exposure to sunlight. When an attack begins, try to wrap something tight around the head. Vigorous daily outdoor exercise helps decrease attacks.
- Maintain regular schedule of meal and sleep.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol.
- Chills can cause migraine. Tiredness, anxiety be eating late should be avoided.
Home Remedies for Migraine Headache:
- Eat foods which will help you keep your blood sugar stabilized. This should be fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and legumes. Stay away from fast acting carbohydrates such as sugary foods and drinks, all-white flour products and processed foods.
- Bay, feverfew and tansy contain parthenolides which help in prevention of migraine.
- Feverfew is a potent herb for migraine treatment. Take 3-9grams of it depending upon the severity of headache. Do not use it when the headache is weak and deficient.
- Garlic and onion juice help in prevention of migraine. Make sure that this herbs are taken daily in your food.
- A combination of valerian-lavender tea is soothing and eases stress accompanying migraine.
- Local application is prepared by adding one part of rosemary oil to ten parts of vegetable oil; rub this on forehead and temples to relieve migraine attack.
