What are the Causes of eye redness and Swollen eyes
Red eyes are one of the common reasons people see the doctor. The problem could be something as simple as too much partying and not enough sleep. Then again, it might mean disease. Dryness, gritty sensation and burning of eyes can also be the symptoms of arthritis of the eyes.
Red, gritty, painful eyes could mean a bacterial or viral infection. The redness could also be a symptom of uveitis- an inflammation caused by allergy.
Redness of the eyelids, rather than of the eyes themselves, could be blepharitis (infection and inflammation of the eyelids) – an infection that features greasy scales, itching and the feeling that there’s something in your eyes.
Preventing Red eye and eye Swelling
- In case of a viral infection, cold is better than warmth. A viral infection makes the eyes red like a bacterial infection, but the discharge is watery and not pus like and there is very little whitish mass on the eyelashes. One eye may look more reddish than the other. A viral infection is not as severe as bacterial but it can be uncomfortable. Cold compresses applied to the eyelid will decrease the blood flow to your eyes and lids and give some relief.
- If the eyes are especially irritated from viral infection, try artificial tears without preservatives. They will put soothing film over the red eyes.
- Some infections can make the eyes sensitive to light, especially bright light. Put on a pair of dark glasses. Sensitiveness to light can be a sign of more severe problem and if it persists see the doctor.
- Try closing your eyes for a nap or simply sitting in the dark for a while.
- To avoid infections include washing your hands frequently, changing your towel and wash cloth daily, changing your pillowcase each night and not sharing towels, washcloths or makeup with other people. Sharing personal items spreads infection.
Eye Redness Treatment
- A decoction prepared from a handful of dried coriander leaves in 60ml of water, is an excellent eye-wash in conjunctivitis or redness of eyes. It helps in relieving pain, swelling and burning sensation.
- A juice prepared from certain vegetables like carrots and spinach have been found helpful in this condition. Take 200ml of spinach juice and add to it 300ml of carrot juice. Raw parsley juice can be substituted for carrot juice. This is found to be very useful in treatment of eye redness and swelling.
- A cup of juice extracted from Gooseberry mixed with honey is useful in treatment of swollen eye.
