Question: My hearing is muted from one ear.
Answer:
What is Ear Wax?
Accumulation of wax deep into the ear canal may result in the sensation of blockage and also causes reduction in hearing ability. The explanation is as follows,
- Wax is naturally produced to help trap dust and foreign particles from entering into the middle and internal ear.
- There are sebaceous glands located in the outer canal which secrete wax.
- As per the natural process, new wax produced pushes the stale wax outwards. As the stale wax gets exposed at the opening of the ear, where it dries and falls out
- When we employ external objects, the wax is actually pushed deeper into the ear. The ear canal is complicated structure, which prevents the ejection of wax that has been pushed in.This causes ear blockage and pain in the ear.
- Reduction in the ability of hear, occurs due to obstruction of air conductivity of sound to the tympanic membrane due to the wax. Removal of ear wax will restore normal hearing.
Ear Wax Treatment:
- Use ear drops like soliwax, which will soften ear wax, which will come out easily. Ear drops have to be used for atleast 5 days before the wax softens and comes out.
- In the meantime, prevent water from entering the ear during bathing or swimming.
