Treatment of IBS | Irritable Bowel Syndrome Relief | Causes, Symptoms of IBS
Question: I have had an upset stomach for last 2 months. There is a lot of gas & frequently have to go to pass stool which is semi-solid. I travel a lot & have been having frequent wine dine (though never in excess). I got my stool tested which showed no infections. I am on Norflox & have started a light vegetarian diet since last 3 days. My worry is that how come the upset has lasted 2 months as it has never happened before.
Answer:
You are suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. It is a functional disorder of the large intestine and is a very common consequence of a hectic, urban lifestyle. Type A personalities and people who are constantly on the move are more prone.
Causes of irritable bowel syndrome:
- Erratic schedules
- No fixed meal timings
- Irregular food and diet patterns
- A diet, whose mainstay is junk and refined food
- Diet severely lacking in fibre
- Inadequate water intake
- Stress
Symptoms of IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome:
- Stomach upsets characterized by pain or discomfort.
- Distention of the abdomen due to excessive flatulence.
- Altered bowel functions –diarrhoea/constipation
- Nausea
- Anxiety, irritability
Treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome:
- Your diet needs complete revamping.
- Dietary fibre promotes proper colon functioning. Eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily to prevent IBS.
- Drink 2 ½ liters of water daily.
- To cure IBS, ginger is an excellent carminative, i.e. it promotes the elimination of intestinal wind and relaxes and soothes the entire intestinal tract.
- Figs are the best gastric and intestinal cleansers and good for irritated bowel treatment.
- Yoga asana – Pawanmuktasana, gives all the abdominal organs a massage. This asana, prevents bloating, gas formation, abdominal discomfort and improves bowel motility. This asana should be done everyday.
- Stress-busting is as crucial and vital as dietary modifications. Learn to stay calm and not get overly affected by stressors.
