Peptic Ulcer Prevention
- Rest as far as practicable should be taken. Anxiety and elements of stress and strain should be given up.
- Irregular and bad eating habits are to be regulated. Diets should be regulated. Diets must be taken in time. Excessive hot, spicy and fried foods should be avoided. Bland diet is advised. In case of duodenal ulcer meals should be taken at 2 hours interval. Milk is widely used in the treatment of ulcer disease, but there are few data to support its efficacy.Calcium in the milk is known to stimulate release of gastric acid secretion. Alcohol should be prohibited. Smoking should be stopped.
- Excessive tea, coffee and beetle leaf chewing and tobacco are to be avoided.
- Now that a host of medications with proven efficacy are available, majority of the patients do not require surgery. It is only required in less than 5% of patients. The medical management of upper gut ulceration varies from duodenal and gastric ulcer.Sedatives and tranquillizers should be used. If pain is not relieved within 24 hours, nasogastric aspiration and intravenous fluid therapy should be started.
Home remedies for Peptic Ulcer
- Daily intake of 10-20gms of pure clarfied butter with rice or meal is rewarding in condition of peptic ulcer.
- Banana fruit contains some ulcer healing properties. One to three bananas are to be taken along with a cup of milk. This provides a protective cover to the ulcer by neutralizing the excessive acidity of gastric juices. However, the small yellow bananas are to be avoided and the larger greener ones preferred.
- Certain plants have astringent properties like wild snake gourd, Pennywort, aloe etc are very useful in the treatment of peptic ulcer.
- The decoction of barley, long pepper, wild snake gourd, along with honey, can be taken for ulcers and acidity twice daily in the dose of 25-50ml.
- Emblica officinalis, Gooseberry is highly useful and the fresh juice extracted from the fruit along with some sugar, if consumed daily on empty stomach, works wonderfully in this condition.
- The powder of turmeric (2.5-5gm) mixed with honey and jaggery has proved to be very effective for controlling peptic ulcer.
