Question:
Every time I pass stools, it becomes painful, such that I’m unable to even walk after wards. I’m not sure whether this is caused by constipation or it is a result of something else. Please advise me on dietary modifications I need to make.
Answer:
Severe straining at stool (due to the passage of hard stools ) can cause pain around the rectum and anus. There are several reasons that cause constipation. I shall recommend the following dietary changes, that will help you manage and prevent constipation. Also, excessive straining at stool, can result in a host of complications, like, piles, prolapse, or herniation.
Diet for Constipation
- A diet that is lacking in fiber greatly affects bowel motility. Fiber aids in easy evacuation, without the need for straining. It adds bulk to the stools, and speeds up the elimination. Foods that provide adequate fiber are – whole cereals, fresh fruits, especially, apples, oranges, sweet limes, bananas, guava, and mangoes, dried fruits, salads and raw vegetables. So it is essential that you step up your intake of these foods and avoid constipation causing foods totally. Having sufficient fiber in the diet will prevent the occurrence of constipation, and is also known to cure the most stubborn cases successfully.
- At least 3 liters of water per day, is very necessary. Water helps in the easy removal of stools. It perks up bowel movement and peristalsis.
- Sedentary lifestyle and no activity contributes to constipation. Thus, regular light exercises, some sport, or Yoga is recommended to keep the bowel in good health.
- Every morning on rising, eat 2 dried figs and 10 raisins, that have been soaked overnight in water. These two foods are excellent for the bowels, and promote good, regular and satisfactory motility.
