What is Gastroenteritis:
Gastroenteritis or stomach virus infection is also called as gastro, gastric flu, tummy bug and stomach flu in lay men’s term although it is unrelated to influenza.
Gastroenteritis is gastrointestinal tracts inflammation. In this intestinal infection condition, stomach as well as small intestines is involved and this can result into acute loose motions or diarrhea.
This condition is usually due to viral infection which can lead to this inflammation. Bacteria’s or other toxic materials or drugs or any parasites are very less often the causative factor in inflammation of the gastro-intestinal tract.
Preventing Gastroenteritis or Stomach Virus Infection:
- You can almost have your normal healthy food but in moderation to what you use to eat daily. Avoid chilies, spices and sour food. Avoid chilies, meat soups and extractives, tamarind and unripe citrus fruits such as oranges, sweet-lime etc. Restrict the use of ginger, garlic, coriander and cumin seeds. Avoid pickles. You can use clarfied butter in cooking as it helps in digestion. Fried food and recycled cooking oil are completely avoided. Salt should be restricted. Bland diet is preferred. Old rice should be preferred which is preserved for one year.Small meals than large one usually helps.
- Coffee, tea, chocolate, soft drinks and oral medications like pain-killers are to be avoided if possible.
- vitamin C help reduce free radical damage in the stomach and eating foods such as carrots, that are high in carotene, has been linked to decrease risk of developing chronic atrophic gastritis.
- Avoid tobacco, alcohol and medicines like aspirin. Mental tension is usually one of aggravating factor which is to be avoided.
Home Remedies for Gastroenteritis or Stomach Virus Infection:
- Licorice root is very useful in reducing stomach virus. It also helps stall the growth of H. pylori which is most common factor in disturbance of stomach flora. Take one teaspoon of licorice powder, mix it with pure clarfied butter and one teaspoon of honey. Take this twice daily on empty stomach.
- Emblica officinalis or Gooseberry is found very useful for treating gastroenteritis. You can take this in powder form (two teaspoon) four times in a day.
- Asparagus racemosa is a refrigerant and anti-spasmodic which can help in case you have stomach colic associated with stomach virus infection. This powder should be taken 3-6gms twice daily depending upon the severity of the case.
