- A research carried out recently, stated that diabetes mellitus can be reversed.
- Dr. Neal Barnard, the lead researcher, says, diabetes can be reversed by reversing the trend of – mounting weight, rising blood sugars and higher doses of medications. He also says that the benefits of going vegan and additionally, banishing milk are multi-fold.
- For the clinical trial, 2 groups of diabetes patients were given 2 separate diets.
- One diet was a vegan diet, while the other was a healthy non-vegetarian diet.Over a 2 year period, the patients consuming a vegan diet showed considerable improvements. Their blood sugar level and the cholesterol level showed a significant decline. They lost oodles of weight and they were also, successful in reducing their medications.
- When on a vegan diet, one lost, approximately, ½ a kilogram in a week.
- A vegan diet, comprising of plant based foods (fruits and vegetables), with, no meat, no milk, and is low in fats is ideal.
- These favorable changes were not seen in the other meat-eating group of diabetics.
Diet for Diabetes
- It is important to understand the various food groups and the impact that the diverse foods have on the blood glucose levels. Eat smaller meal portions in the course of the day, and do not consume few heavy ones.
- Ensure that the fiber intake is kept high. An intake of 25 to 30 grams per day is advocated. One can easily reach this target by eating sensibly.Eat whole wheat flour. Ditch polished refined flour. Opt for whole grained breads. Add bran to the flour while making bread. Also, brown rice has higher fiber content than the white one. A sufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables (especially apples, oranges, grapes, and guavas) are loaded with fiber. Dietary fiber promises a drop in serum glucose levels.
- Bitter gourd should be added to the diet of every diabetic. The bitter gourd could be had, either. lightly sautéed in a little bit of oil, or as a freshly expressed juice. 3 servings in a week are recommended. This vegetable has an insulin-like compound which lowers blood glucose level, and also keeps it in check.
Exercise for Diabetes
- A diabetic must be active. It burns fat, helps keep the weight in control, and also keeps a check on the blood sugar levels.
- Walk at least for 1/2 an hour everyday.
- Use the stairs. Avoid the elevator.
- Help with the household chores.
- Don’t fall in to the monotony of a fixed exercise pattern. Change your exercise plans and schedules often, so that you do not get bored of it.

- Diabetes is a debilitating and an incapacitating disease. If prompt steps in the right direction are not taken, it could take a serious turn and have disastrous consequences. Diabetes is known to cause blindness, kidney malfunction, and even amputation.
- Be alert for these warning signs which could occur despite you being on diabetic medication:
- A non healing ulcer
- Burning and tingling numbness of the palms and soles
- Urinary difficulties

I totally agree with you.By doing exercise and avoiding aggravating habits one can control the blood sugar level.
Its very true that by including bitter melon in the diet is very effective.There are also herbal pills available which contain many more anti-diabetic herbs like epicatechin from Pterocarpus marsupium and other effective antidabetic herbs.
