In continuation with our series on Yoga for Diabetes, let us now become familiar with Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) and Shalabhasana (Locust Pose) and its special benefits for Diabetes Patients.
BHUJANGASANA (COBRA POSE) And Diabetes
This asana is found very beneficial in the treatment of diabetes, bronchitis, asthma and spondylitis.
It tones up the reproductive system, improves the efficiency of the abdomen and aides digestion. It exercises the vertebrae, back muscles and spine.
Technique for Bhujangasana
- Lie flat on your stomach. Let your legs be straight, feet together and toes should point out.
- Touch your forehead to the ground and rest it.
- Place the palms on the ground right beneath the shoulders.
- Breathe in and slowly raise your head the neck, chest and upper abdomen, supporting your-self lightly on the arms.
- Now bend backwards, so that the spine bends and arch your back as far as possible and look upwards.
- Hold your breath for a few seconds while maintaining the position.
- Breathe out and return back to the original position slowly.
Pregnant women and people with slipped discs should avoid this asana.
SHALABHASANA (Locust Pose)
This asana has been found beneficial in the treatment of diabetes, stomach and digestive disorders, low back pain, rheumatism and arthritis.
It strengthens the whole body especially the neck, back, chest and waist. It prolongs life besides providing peace and calmness.
Technique for Shalabhansana
- Lie flat on your stomach. Legs should be stretched out straight, feet should be together, chin and nose should rest on the ground and look straight ahead.
- Place your arms under your body and keep them straight.
- Now form fists with your hands and place them close to the thighs.
- Next, raise the legs. They should be kept together straight and stretch them as far as you can and avoid bending the toes and knees.
- Maintain this position for a few seconds and repeat it 4 to 5 times.
People suffering from heart disease or blood pressure should not practice this asana.
