What are the cures available for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Cure in type 1 diabetes is limited to symptomatic treatment and maintenance of blood sugar levels with insulin. As management of type 1 diabetes is completely dependent on exogenous insulin in most of the cases. The ideal treatment for diabetes mellitus type 1 would allow the person to lead a completely normal life, to remain not only symptoms free but in good health, to achieve a normal metabolic state and to escape the complications associated with long term diabetes.

Treatment can be divided into three parts:

  1. Diet for curing Diabetes Mellitus
  2. Insulin based cures
  3. Herbal management of Diabetes Mellitus.

Diet for curing Diabetes Mellitus

The diet must be nutritionally adequate for the persons needs and it must, therefore, be estimated for each individual person after considering factors such as age, sex, actual weight in relation to desirable weight, activity, occupation and financial resources.
An approximate range for the various groups might be:

  1. An obese, middle aged or elderly person with mild diabetes should get 1000-1600kcal of food supplement per day.
  2. An elderly diabetic but not overweight should get around 1400-1800kcal per day.
  3. A young, active diabetic will require 1800-3000 kcal per day.

The body weight must be maintained at or slightly below the ideal weight for the person’s height.

Insulin based cures

This has to be taken with consultation from diabetologist. This is normally the main line of treatment in type 1 as is required to provide insulin as pancreas is unable to do so.

Types of insulin

  1. Purified insulin provides better metabolic control and decrease incidences of insulin resistance or allergy. Porcine and human insulin have least chance of antigenecity.
  2. Short acting insulin: this has a rapid onset (with 30 minutes), early peak effect (8-10 hours) and short duration of action (90 minutes). This is insulin of choice in emergencies (infections, trauma and surgery).
  3. Intermediate acting insulin: these include isophane and insulin zinc suspension with onset of action after 2 ½ hours, peak effect 8-12 hours and duration of action 18-24 hours.
  4. Long acting insulin: include crystalline variants of insulin zinc suspension (ultra lente) and mixtures of amorphous and crystalline forms (lente in insulin). They have duration of action of more than 24 hours.
  5. Dose of insulin is adjusted according to the needs of the individual in conjunction with blood glucose monitoring.

Herbal management of Diabetes Mellitus

This can be followed every one having either type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
