Fungal Infection among Diabetics
Diabetes is a disease that can have several complications if left unmonitored and neglected. One of these complications is diabetes fungal infection. Diabetes fungal infections usually affect the skin, nails, and sinuses. It can also affect vital organs such as the brain and lungs.
Common Effects of Diabetes and Fungal Infections
Diabetes fungal infections should be given proper attention to prevent it from developing into more serious and debilitating illnesses. The most common diabetes fungal infections are the following:
- Athlete’s foot that is associated with scaly skin in between toes and feet that goes with burning sensation and uncontrollable itch on the feet area
- Ringworm on certain parts of the body.Ringworm can hit different parts of the body even the scalp. The symptoms of ringworm are itchiness, redness, and elevated skin along the infected area.
- Another common effect of diabetes fungal infection is infections on the toe and hand nails. The common symptoms of fungal infection in the nails are splitting of the nails, changes in the nail texture and appearance. The nails also become crumbly when infected with fungi.
- Jock itch is the usual infections of athletes and individuals whose groin, anus, and genital areas are moist for prolonged time. Jock itch is usually accompanied with redness in the infected area, itchiness, and red rashes.
- Oral thrush is another type of fungal infection caused by diabetes. It can affect several areas of the body particularly the genital and anal areas. The usual signs of thrush are burning sensation on the infected area, buildup of white patches that looks like cottage cheese, thick and white discharges with itchiness and red rashes. Fungi are most likely to thrive and infect body areas that are warm and damp such as the mouth, below the breasts, armpits, and foreskin.
