Diabetes is a de-generative disease with a very long duration. Hormonal imbalance and disturbance in the metabolism of the body are the main factors that promote diabetes. Diabetes is classified into two types.
- Diabetes Insipidus – It is a rare disorder caused by deficiency of certain hormones secreted by pituitary gland. There is excess loss of body fluid in such conditions.
- Diabetes Mellitus – It is more common form of diabetes and more serious. Diabetes Mellitus is a nutritional disorder where the blood glucose (sugar) level is abnormally high and excess glucose is passed in the urine.
Development of Diabetes
When the food that we eat is not utilized properly due to improper production of insulin, Diabetes develops.
The food that we eat is broken down and converted into glucose (sugar) in the body. Insulin is a hormone that controls the sugar levels in the blood, helps in its utilization and storage by the body. Lack of insulin causes abnormalities in the metabolism or breaking down of carbohydrates, proteins and fats in the body. As a result glucose is not used by the body cells and builds up in the blood causing Diabetes.
Sometimes sugar levels of people who are fond of sweets rises to 180 milligram. Excess sugar is then excreted in the urine. Sugar level comes back to normal in a short time. This condition is hyperglycemia and not diabetes mellitus.
