Although the term swine flu is indicative only of a disease that is endemic to pigs, the virus that causes the disease can mutate and be transmitted to humans. When this happens, the burden that societies and governments face in handling the problems caused by swine flu becomes even greater. As the swine flu outbreak during the early part of the current year shows, man cannot be too complacent even if the number of deaths has been very low in the context of the number of those affected by the outbreak.

Swine Flu Treatment

The problem of how to treat swine flu should take into consideration whether the infection is on animals or on humans. This is because once the virus has been transmitted to humans, it has gone some degrees of mutation, thus enabling it to withstand the effect of common vaccines.

Generally speaking, once the swine flu virus has been transmitted to humans, the virus affecting people is known as h1n1 virus. As such, h1n1 treatment differs from the swine flu treatment administered to pigs.

In pigs:

• The main method available for swine flu treatment in pigs involves the strict management of the swine facility and other implements used in the growing and production of pigs.
• Vaccination can also be used in swine flu treatment in pigs. However, because the virus is known to mutate and there are several strains known, one vaccination may not provide the answer to a specific outbreak. It is for this reason that once an outbreak is detected, it is best for those involved to consult with health experts so as to determine the involved strain of the virus for a more efficient treatment.
• When vaccination is not enough, quarantine is resorted to as the last measure of swine flu treatment. This procedure is also employed in case of outbreaks in humans.

In humans:

• Certain drugs such as tamiflu are commonly used to treat swine flu infection in humans. More recently, the use of vaccines has been allowed after some delay, which is largely due to the propaganda against vaccines during the 1976 outbreak.
• Hand washing and the use of hand sanitizers are also known to treat swine flu infestation in humans.
• Another strategy of swine flu treatment employed is to strengthen one’s immune system by eating up a lot of foods rich in vitamin C.
