Swine Flu Outbreak of 1918
The very first pandemic scare that swine flu brought to humans was in 1918. This influenza outbreak that started in Spain (hence, the other term Spanish flu) has killed fifty million people worldwide and infected five hundred million of the world’s population. As the mechanism of how this disease has spread that much was not yet figured out until recently in 2009, the influenza virus has once again been virulent this year.

- Vaccination is probably the best treatment and prevention there is against swine flu. These vaccines are incessantly disseminated throughout the countries in the world.
- In October 2009, the first vaccine specifically against the H1N1 virus has been released in the form of a nasal spray and is allowed for use in healthy individuals from ages 2 to 49.
Swine Flu Antiviral Drugs
- Antiviral drugs are the only effective treatment for people who are infected with swine flu. These drugs can make the disease milder and make the patient feel better faster.
- For treatment using antiviral drugs, it is best if taken soon after two days of symptoms.
- On the other hand, the CDC or US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the use of Oseltamivir or Tamiflu for the treatment as well as prevention of infection. But in some cases, most individuals recover from swine flu without other antiviral drug intake.
