The recent outbreak of swine flu causes great alarm not just in Mexico, where it was first reported to have started, but to the entire world as well. Its ballooning number of confirmed cases and raising death toll has moved almost everyone to look into the probable causes of swine flu. But what really is swine flu and where did it start?

The swine flu is an infection in the respiratory system caused by orthomyxovirus, popularly known as H1N1.

It is considered as an airborne virus hence it can easily be transferred from one man to another.  It was first discovered sometime in the year 1918 and has reported that swine flu causes death to about 50 to 100 million people in the entire world. The name swine flu was literally taken from the name swine influenza virus which is commonly seen in pigs. The transfer from one pig to another had been long discovered and confirmed.
However, the transmission of the virus from pigs to humans is still to be proven.

Up to the writing of this article, no particular conclusion has been arrived at on what are the factors that causes swine flu. However, study conducted by the University of Iowa in 2004 shows that swine flu causes illnesses to people who have physical contacts with pigs and poultry such as farm workers, meat-processing employees, as well as veterinarians.

The said study recommended that these people should be given more flu vaccines shots and should be given close monitoring.
