Many children pass worms in their stool, due to infestations of worm in their intestine. When the worms become excess in the intestine, or if the intestinal flora is not suitable to the worms, they travel to other possible destinations. While doing so they entangle in the mucilage of fibers and the byproducts forming stool. Eventually they are excreted with the stool.

The types of intestinal worms in children are: round worm, hook worm, pin worms etc.

Worms in children stool can be in the form of hatched eggs or adult worms.

Mother of these children complains of observing worms which are two to three inches long, like an earthworm. They are round worms.

Pin worms, hook worms and thread worms are very small, and are hard to be detected with naked eye in children’s stool.

The mode of entry: it is mostly from the feco- oral route. Contamination of food articles with eggs of adult worm due to unhygienic habits. The eggs pass through the GI tract and harbor in the intestine to become adult worm.

Hookworm gets in through the foot skin, when the child walks in mud without wearing shoes.

The cycle of adult worm and hatched eggs goes on continuously, with stool being a catalyst for their transfer.

Stool examination under a microscope may reveal eggs of roundworm, hookworm and pinworms in suspected cases.

Treatment for Worms In Children’s Stool

• Drink boiled and filtered water.
• Wash root vegetables, spinach etc with soap water and then with plain water, before cooking.
• Train the child hygienic habits of cleaning their hands, with soap and water after defecation to prevent the worm infestation, and eventually passing worms in their stools.
• Nails of the child should be cut at regular interval.
• Child should be encouraged to avoid scratching in the anus, so that the eggs of may not lodge in their fingernails.
• Milky juice of unripe papaya and one teaspoon of honey will act as an anti- helminthic remedy for the child. It will kill the worms and expel them in the child’s stool.
• 1 tsp of garlic juice in a glass of carrot juice is a good remedy for round worms, pinworms and other parasitic infestations. It helps to eradicate the worms in their stools.
