Sugar Benefits for Children:
As per a new study consuming sugary drinks and foods in moderate quantities can help children improve concentration and enhances their memory.
David Benton, lead researcher, said that the study has proved that sugary foods and drinks greatly boost concentration levels and attentiveness in children. Children in the age group of 5 to 10 years need twice as much of glucose for their brains, in comparison with an adult.
In the clinical trial, sixteen 9 and 10 year olds were given fruit squash that contained an artificial sweetener or glucose.
After the consumption of the squash, the children’s’ memory test scores improved by over 10 %.
Health Tips for Strong Memory:
- Ensure that your child eats a wholesome breakfast every morning.An ideal breakfast will fuel up the child for the entire day.
- Make your child solve a cross word puzzle or a jigsaw or a quiz daily. It will sharpen his intellect and boost attentiveness.
Healthy Sweet Foods for Kids:
- Sugar is food for the brain. The brain requires a constant supply of blood sugar to function effectively, hence hypoglycemia should be avoided at all costs. Symptoms that you should watch out for include- irritability, mood swings, crankiness, and fatigue.Give your child foods that are rich in natural sugars such as dry fruits (dry figs, dates and resins), fresh fruits, yogurt and milk.
- Stay off health drinks, protein shakes, aerated beverages and processed foods which have artificial sweeteners.
- Chocolate, 30 grams per day is an acceptable serving. 30 grams constitutes four to six squares of chocolate, which provide 150 calories. Also it would be advisable to opt for the dark chocolate variety. Chocolate contains, an active substance called ‘anandamide’. Our brain has receptors for this chemical and that explains why when we eat chocolate we feel less anxious and more relaxed.
- You can choose from a whole range of healthy breakfast options like muesli, cornflakes, wheat flakes, rice flakes and oats with honey and fresh or dry fruits or nuts, along with whole fruit smoothies.
Foods that Enhance Memory:
- Walnuts: According to the doctrine of signature, walnuts resemble the human brain. Walnuts are a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids, which keep the brain agile and alert. Walnuts are known to enhance attentiveness, concentration levels and stave off depression.
- Foods that are loaded with vitamin B12 are a must for children. Vitamin B12 or cobalamin helps maintain normal mental function, and prevent mental confusion and depression. Excellent sources of this nutrient are – organ meats (liver, kidney), oysters, sardines, eggs, haddock, dark green leafy vegetables, whey, and cottage cheese.
