Home Remedies for Stomachache

Home remedies commonly used for stomachache in children are – ginger, asafetida, Bishop’s weed, cumin seeds and clove.

  • Asafetida – It has an analgesic like effect and is very good for digestion.
  • A paste of asafetida is prepared by mixing it in water and is applied over the abdomen. It relieves infantile colic and reduces gaseous distension.
  • A pinch of asafetida can be dissolved in 3 to 4 teaspoons of water and can be given orally to older children to relieve stomachache.
  • Bishop’s weed, belongs to the family of coriander and it is excellent for digestive disorders.
  • A pinch of Bishop’s weed eaten immediately after meals helps digestion.
  • A teaspoon of  Bishop’s weed boiled in a cup of water for 10 minutes and after cooling, 2 to 3 teaspoon should be given to children to relieve stomachache.
  • It can also be used externally for fomentation over abdomen by heating a small quantity and wrapped in a cloth.
  • Cumin seeds has carminative properties and hence helps to relieve intestinal colic.
  • Cumin seeds can be boiled in water and can be taken orally, usually cumin seeds and Bishop’s weed are boiled together for better relief.
  • Cumin seeds are roasted and powdered and one half teaspoon mixed with honey is taken for digestive disorders like colic, vomiting and indigestion.
  • Clove - it has properties of excellent carminative and acts as digestive stimulant and anti-spasmodic. It helps relieving griping and colic pain.
  • A decoction is prepared after boiling five to six cloves in a cup of water. This is ideal in relieving colic, pain and flatulence.
  • Ginger is especially useful in treating flatulent colic, dyspepsia and indigestion.
  • A small piece of ginger can be directly chewed after meals to relieve pain.

Stomachache in children is usually self-limiting episode, but sometimes it may be an initial symptom of a serious underlying disease.

Causes of Stomach ache in Children

  • Surgical emergencies- acute appendicitis, acute peritonitis, acute pancreatitis and intestinal obstruction.
  • Non-surgical causes- infantile colic, psychogenic pain, acute gastroenteritis, duodenitis, carbohydrate intolerance, peptic ulcer, irritable colon syndrome, duodenitis and indigestion.
