What do Heart Murmurs mean?

You hear two sounds when you listen to anyone’s heart with a stethoscope. That is, one after the other in succession. These sounds are normal. But if there is presence of an extra sound it is usually called a murmur. The sound of blood flowing through the heart is called a murmur.

During certain stages of development heart murmurs are normal. When you have fever there is often murmur due to the blood rushing through the heart.

What is the treatment for Heart Murmurs?

• Your doctor may refer your child to a specialist if he is unsure why the murmur is present.
• Some murmurs are present at birth. It shows that changes that should have taken place in the baby’s heart have not happened.
• It signifies that blood flows through the chambers of the heart is flowing through a different way from normal. Some describe this as “hole in the heart”. Many of these holes are not serious or harmful.
