Halitosis In Children Causes And Symptoms: Treatment For Bad Breath

Halitosis is nothing but bad breath from the mouth. Halitosis is a common complaint in children as well as in adults. Halitosis in itself is not a serious disease, but it may be point to some underlying condition which causes it.

Most common cause of halitosis or bad breath is gum disease. Dental decay may result in abscess, which produces foul smelling pus. It is attributed to the improper dental hygiene in children, but certain other pathologies may also cause halitosis in children.

  • Poor oral hygiene.
  • Viral fever.
  • Chronic tonsillitis.
  • Breathing from mouth.
  • Orthodontic devices.
  • Bronchitis or Bronchiectasis or chronic sinusitis.
  • Oral thrush.
  • Tooth cavity.
  • Poor dental hygiene.
  • Chronic gastritis, intestinal sluggishness and constipation.

Symptoms Of Halitosis

Bad breath is the only symptom of halitosis in children with symptoms of underlying cause like dental pain in tooth cavity, pain in the throat in tonsillitis.

Treatment Of Halitosis Or Bad Breath In Children

  • Proper dental care is necessary in children. Do not give sugar and candies; clean the teeth twice in a day. Especially while retiring at night.
  • Maintain proper oral hygiene by cleaning tongue with a tongue cleaner regularly to prevent halitosis.
  • Tooth cavities should be filled up. Tonsillitis and other diseases should be treated.
  • Proper nutrition and diet of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables and fruits should be given to the child to treat halitosis in children.
  • Include fresh fruits and vegetables in their diet. They are highly beneficial in improving gastric motility and contain the essential vitamins and minerals to fight disorders in the oral cavity.
  • Guava juice or guava fruit is useful for halitosis in children. It contains acids and minerals and vitamin C which in dental conditions.
  • Fenugreek tea is also helpful to cure halitosis in children.
  • Avocados fruit removes intestinal decomposition which is a common cause of halitosis.
