Eczema in Children and Babies | Treatment and Cure for Dermatitis
Also called dermatitis, is a condition where the skin becomes dry and is inflamed. The tendency can be inherited. It is less common in breastfed babies. Eczema can also arise from contact with an irritant, example bleach or washing powder.
Symptoms of Eczema
- It is a very itchy condition and affected children scratch their skin till it appears raw and red.
- It often starts in the first or second year of life.
- Eczema can affect any area, the inside of the elbow and behind the knees the skin is affected.
- Very mild cases of eczema simply appear as dry, rough areas of skin with or without itch.
- Contact eczemas are the ones that affect only the area that it has come in contact with, example allergy to detergents will often affect hands.
Treatment of Eczema in Children
- Avoid contacts with irritants that can cause eczema.
- Use plenty of non-perfumed moisturizer. Moisturizing forms an important part in the treatment of Eczema. They are available on prescription. In severe cases it has to be done several times.
- Consult a doctor if moisturizing fails and the skin dries and becomes red and sore.
- Doctors may prescribe steroid creams where moisturizers have failed to keep the skin clear.
- Steroids can have side effects. So doctor will prescribe weak creams and if they don’t work strong creams maybe used. When the skin seems to have improved, steroid should be stopped or amount should be reduced.
- Eczema occurs from time to time. You may not be successful in stopping its comeback. But liberal use of moisturizers helps reduce the severity of the attack. It may also reduce the need for steroids.
- Flare ups can be caused by exposure to stress, certain foods and animals. Homeopathy remedies help a lot in treating Eczema condition and are quite popular.
