Children with Diarrhea | Causes and Treatment of Diarrhea in Children

Frequent and/or loose bowel motion is called diarrhea.

Cause

Inability to digest food, infections (gastro-enteritis) or intestinal disease like colitis maybe the main factors.

Symptoms

• Constant loose and foul smelling motions.
• In case of digestive problems such as coeliac disease the bowel motions maybe pale, fatty and difficult to flush away.
• There maybe undigested food in the bowel motion.

What to Do

• If diarrhea lasts longer, a sample of the stool can be sent to laboratory to test infection.
• Make an appointment with the doctor if the diarrhea persists for a long time.
• Re-hydration powders should be kept handy to replace the salts lost in diarrhea. Take the right dosage.
• Fluid intake should be maintained.
• Seek doctor’s advice immediately if there is blood in bowel motion.
