Constipation in Children | Home Remedies for Constipation in Children
Emptying the bowels two to three times a day, to once every two days is normal. The pattern may differ from the breastfed babies to those who are bottle fed. Breastfed babies are less likely to develop constipation as compared to formula milk fed babies.
Causes of Constipation
- Some children take longer than others to gain control of their bowels.
- Some children don’t like to use a potty and thereby constipate.
- In extreme cases the child does not empty their bowels for several days. In such cases the lower bowel gets filled with hardened feces and fluid from higher up in the bowel trickles down and dirties the child’s pant.
- If the child finds it painful to open bowels he may refuse to evacuate.Anal fissure is fairly common and piles are very rare.
- Lack of roughage in food and fluid causes constipation.
What You Can Do
- If the child does not like to use the potty then put a nappy over the potty so they sit in the soft nappy. Gradually they get used to sitting on the potty.
- You should be patient about this training. Do not show the child that you are anxious and annoyed.
- Sufficient fiber should be included in the child’s diet. Fruits and vegetables like oranges, beans, peas and cabbage are excellent sources.
- Buy bread that has fibers in it.
- Give the child plenty of water. If he does not like to drink plain water then mix a little squash or fruit juice in it. Fizzy drinks should be avoided because they can cause stomach pain.
- Bran is not recommended for very young children. Instead they can be given extra fruits and vegetables accompanied by plenty of water.
- If all these methods fail then the child may have to undergo surgery.
