When parts of the brain that control body’s movements and posture are damaged, it causes cerebral palsy. The extent of damage may vary from being slight to severe. Cerebral palsy is more common in very premature babies. Some children may suffer from mental handicap as a result of brain damage.
When does the Brain Damage Occur?
The damage may occur before birth, during birth or during the first two years of life. The damage may not always be seen at birth, but is noticeable as the child grows.
What are the Causes of Cerebral Palsy?
- Improper functioning of the placenta, infections in the mother during pregnancy or lack of oxygen may damage the developing brain.
- The blood vessels in premature babies are very delicate and can be easily damaged during labor or during the first few weeks.
What treatment or precautions can be taken for cerebral palsy?
- Tests done at the eighth week helps check cerebral palsy.
- If parents notice that their child has not developed as required. They should consult their general practitioner.
- Children with cerebral palsy may need continual treatment throughout their childhood.
- Parents should take active part in the treatment program and help the child with exercising at home.
