Answer:

Shin Bone Fracture

The scientific name for shin bone is Tibia. It is a long and strong bone in the lower leg, the other bone in the lower leg is called fibula.

Tibia and fibula connects the knee and ankle bones.

The name tibia is derived from the Greek word meaning flute.

Tibia is the strongest bone in the body and its function is to bear the weight of the body.

Tibia is the second largest bone in the body, the first being femur.

Shin bone is more vulnerable to trauma from direct blow as there is not much protection from muscles and fat to absorb the blow.  Injury can result from a kick of a football player, or direct hit from a hockey stick.

Symptoms of tibia fracture:

  • Leg pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness
  • If the fracture is severe then there is inability to stand, and foot weakness.

Treatment of shin bone fracture is complete bed rest, with elevated leg. Cold compresses and splint may also work well in tibial fracture. Severe fractures may require surgery.
