
Lower Leg Cramps
Question: Sometimes, during sleep if legs are stretched, leg muscles are cramped causing misery. Sometimes it inflates on upper part of body.
Causes of Leg Cramp
Sudden and involuntary contraction of the calf muscles result in leg cramps especially at night. These cramps may affect any age group but more common in the older population.
Though the exact etiology is not known, nocturnal cramps in the leg are associated with muscular overexertion, structural disorders (like flat or high arched feet), and standing for prolonged periods of time or dehydration.
Electrolyte imbalance is also known to cause cramps. Dehydration or loss of water through excessive physical exertion, use of diuretics, etc are also know to cause leg cramps at night. Pregnant women are also known to suffer from this problem.
Home Remedy for Leg Cramp
In order to prevent leg cramping some basic precautions to be taken are:
- Take supplements of calcium, magnesium and potassium.
- Include milk, cheese, yogurt, fish, eggs, fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables and nuts in your diet.
- Stretching exercises for your calf muscles twice a day will be of great help.
- Hot fomentation on the calf muscles or soaking your feet in hot water for 10 minutes, just prior to going to bed will improve circulation and reduces night cramps.
- Check your footwear.
