The hamstring is a set of tendons that are attached to the rear of the knee. When there is an imbalance of the strength between the front muscles of your thighs and the tendon at the rear of your knee, sore hamstring happens. A sore hamstring usually happens among athletes. But the incidence of painful hamstring is also noticeable among children and the effects are more damaging. The usual causes of hamstring soreness include:

  • Doing strenuous activities that are beyond your capacity and strength
  • Weak muscles
  • Engaging in physical activities such as sports and physical exercises without proper warm-up
  • Poor muscle flexibility
  • Physical characteristic such as imbalance length of legs
  • Overexertion of muscles
  • Muscle strain

How to Treat a Strained Hamstring with Home Remedies

Pulled hamstring symptoms can still be treated at home with simple remedies that do not involve unnecessary expenses and surgical operations.

These home remedies are the following:

  • Cold compress. Immediately after the injury, let your muscles rest for a while then apply cold compress. Wrap iced cubes on a clean towel then directly apply it on the injured area to soothe the pain and reduce the soreness.
  • Placing the legs at an elevated level is also an effective hamstring strain treatment. Elevating the legs will allow muscles to rest and recover.
  • While the sore hamstring is still recuperating, wrap the knees firmly to support the muscle.
  • Do not exercise your sore muscles in an attempt to treat it. The muscles will fully recover with enough rest.
  • While on the process of recovery, flex your muscles every now and then by stretching them slowly but stop when it is causing pain and discomfort.
  • Go back to your exercise routing gradually to avoid muscle damage relapse. Rest every after a few minutes to relax your muscles while doing physical activities.
