What are Shin Splints
Overuse injuries, cause inflammation of the tendons and muscles of the lower leg, usually the tissue surrounding the shinbone. It is common among runners and is characterized by pain in the lower leg.
The muscles in the lower leg enlarge during exercising and press against the 2 bones of the lower leg. Repeated pressure and stress can cause irritation of the muscles, tendons bones or ligaments and can result in tendinitis. If the pain is on the inner side of the calf it is called posterior shin splint and if it is on the outer side it is anterior shin splint.
Symptoms of Shin Splints
Pain is persistent and may vary from mild to severe, in the front or side of the lower leg. The pain may generally start during exercising and sometimes it may start later.
What Causes Shin Splints
Running, jumping or pounding feet repeatedly on hard surfaces can damage the shin splints and cause pain. Poor posture, gait and wearing poorly cushioned shoes can contribute towards shin splints.
Natural treatment for Shin Splints
- Do toe raises and foot rolls several times a day.Lie on your back and flex your feet.
- Avoid running on cement and concrete hard surfaces.
- Until you can resume running or jumping without pain, engage yourself in swimming and bicycling.
- Don’t increase the intensity of your workout suddenly, as it may cause an injury.
- Replace shoes after every 3 months, if you run regularly.
