Anterior and Posterior Osteophytic Spurring Causes and Treatment

Question: I have pain in the neck and no feeling in the right hand. What can I do to help myself at home? Osteophytic spurring is seen at c4 to c6 vertebrae on X-ray. Also can you tell me what the causes of anterior and posterior osteophytic spurring are?

Answer: Osteophytes or bone spurs are extra bony growths on the joints of the spine. It can be on any spinal region such as cervical spine, lumbar spine. Osteophytic spurs can be present in other area of the joints like knee joint, wrist joint, shoulder joint etc.

When they are rubbed against the adjacent bone or the nerve they cause extreme pain. Osteophytes occurs as age increases, osteophyte can be on anterior or posterior region of the cervical spine.

Symptoms of Anterior and Posterior Osteophytic Spurring

  • Neck pain, back pain is common in cervical osteophytes
  • Radiating pain in the shoulder and hands,
  • Headache
  • Weakness and numbness in the affected arm and leg due to compression of the nerve

Causes of Osteophytes In Cervical Region

  • Unhealthy life style, accidents, sports injury, and malnutrition are few causes of forming oseteophytes.
  • They are formed due to aging process. Body in its natural way forms osteophytes to support the joints for its stability.

Treatment and Home Remedy For Osteophytic Spurring In Cervical Spine

  • Neck exercise and physio therapy exercise will relax the strained muscles and the ligaments of the cervical spine
  • Ice pack or hot fomentation with water can help to reduce inflammation
  • Take 1gm of curcumin twice in a day for one month, on empty stomach in the morning.
  • Curcumin is a yellow pigment in turmeric which acts on osteophytes of the spine.
  • Flaxseed hot packs can be applied on the cervical region to give relief from pain.
