Causes of Neck Strain or Sprain
Working in a hunched-over position for long hours is a frequent cause for neck sprain. Working so that you must lean your head forward, to see what you are doing, causes the muscles of the neck strain and cause spasm. A common cause is stress, insomnia or arthritis.
Treatment for Sprained Neck
- Bed rest is must if you have severe neck sprain.
- Sleeping position is important. Do not sleep on your stomach but on your side or best on your back.
- Keep your neck warm when you are outside in the cold.Don’t let a draft chill it while sleeping. Avoid talking on phone for long periods as it develops neck tension and sleep on a firm mattress.
- While working, stop in between and take a break, get up, stretch and do a few simple neck exercise, if neck sprain is not severe.
- Sit in chair which gives your back a good support and sit upright, do not bend forward. Keep your head level and pull in your chin and look forward and not downward. Do not sit in any one position for too long.
Remedies for Neck Sprain
- Place an ice pack on the back of the neck or apply ice, wrapped in a towel. This should be done for 10 to 15 minutes at a time and 3 to 4 times in a day. Then give some heat to the painful area. This can be done with a heating pad or a hot shower.
- Wrap a rolled-up towel around your neck and fasten it snugly with safety pin. It will support your head and reduce painful movements.
- Bilberry contains flavonoid compounds (anthocyanosides) which relieve pain when applied, use a bilberry extract dosage of 100mg to 400mg, depending upon the severity of the symptoms.
- Capsaicin in cayenne, when applied to the painful neck area, stimulates and blocks small-diameter pain fibers.
- Ginkgo biloba, when given to the person with sprained neck, significantly decreases the pain and sensitivity in the painful area.
