Foot Cramps Causes:

Foot cramps occur when instead of relaxing and stretching out after contraction, a muscle contracts and remains that way, causing pain. It is an involuntary contraction of muscle. You can get Muscle cramps at all ages. Age group can have wide range from 15 and 80yrs and almost every one will in some time of their life are bound to come across foot cramps or pain. Growing pains are common in children.
Decreased blood circulation to the foot can be the reason for foot cramps. Other very common cause is electrolyte imbalance; usually imbalance in the levels of magnesium and calcium in the body can result in foot cramps.

It is also seen in vitamin E deficiency.
Dehydration can also cause foot cramps while sleeping.

Preventing Foot Cramps:

  • Find the center of the cramp, where the pain is worst and with your thumb, fist or heel of hand, press into the center of the cramp, exerting enough pressure to cause pain but not to the point of excruciation. Hold the pressure for 10secs. The cramp will often be relieved.
  • In your case when you have foot cramp while sleeping try slipping that leg out of the covers. As it gets cold, the cramp will go away.
    If the cramp is not relieved then apply ice pack over the area for 20mins.
  • Massage the foot and heat generally helps in relieving the pain. Application of heating pad to the area usually relieves the symptom.
  • After hard exercise or physical work, slow down instead of stopping suddenly.
  • Drink enough water with electrolyte supplement. Drink fruit drinks.
  • Eat green leafy vegetables in order to improve the quality of blood circulation.

Home Remedies for Foot Cramps:

  • External compress can be made from peppermint and tea prepared from peppermint is also taken internally for better results.
  • Rubbing lobelia extract on the painful area will relieve foot cramps.
  • When you get foot cramp one should pinch the upper lip between the index finger and thumb for a period of around 30seconds or until the cramp disappear.
  • Exercise regime for those with repeated cramps- remove your shoes and stand facing a wall approximately two to three feet away. While keeping your heels firmly on the floor you should lean forward as if pushing. While during this act you feel moderate pull in certain position you hold yourself in that position for say 10seconds. After doing this one should relax for 10secs and repeat the procedure for three times at least.
