Treatments for Hiccups:
Hiccup is an abrupt muscle contraction inspiratory in origin followed immediately by closure of glottis. Hiccup is said to be generated by a supra-spinal centre. During hiccups intercostals muscle also participate making it a diaphragmatic event or showing involvement of diaphragm. Hiccups usually occur after a heavy meal or alcoholic bout or excess smoking which results in gastric distention. Overeating causes the downward extension of the stomach and this result in pressure over the diaphragm.
Preventing Hiccups:
- Hiccups can be generated due to increase in the level of carbon-dioxide in the blood. For this condition one can follow a procedure of breathing into a paper bag. This should be carried out at least 10 times. It should be done rapidly and care should be taken that no air should be leaked out.
- A breathe should be hold as long as you can and when you feel that you are about to get hiccup, you swallow your breathe.Carry this out three to five times. Take some gap and after taking a deep breathe start again.
- A breath should be hold as long as you can. Now exhale the breathe you are holding and again hold as long as possible.
- One more procedure is blowing out air in steady and slow stream. Extend head as much backwards as possible and hold your breathe.
- Take a deep breath and drink 10 swallows of water while not breathing.
- Do not use alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, cold or carbonated water.
Home Remedies for Hiccups:
- Swallowing one teaspoonful dry sugar often helps stopping hiccups in few minutes of time. Swallowing the sugar usually helps in soothing the nerve bundles as glucose is required as for normal working of the nerves.
- To cure hiccups; bend over, placing the head lower than the diaphragm, then drink one glass of cold water through the straw. Then remain in that position for several minutes.
- Tickle the soft portion in the back of the roof of the mouth with a cotton-tipped swab.
- Sit on the ground with straight legs touching the ground. Now bend and try touching your great toe. Be in this position for a minute. This simple exercise is useful in adults as well as in children.
