Answer:
Pitting Edema Cure, Symptoms
Swelling in the ankle joint or the lower leg is a result of retention of body fluid in the tissues. Edema is the term mentioned when there is swelling in the tissues. When there is swelling and if you press on the swollen leg, it causes pitting in that portion it is called pitting edema.
Causes of edema in one leg: In many cases swelling can be without any cause or due to pooling of fluid in circumstances such as long standing or sitting for long hours. This is due to gravitation.
In Varicose veins, this can be present as swelling in lower legs due to weak valve of the veins. Valves of the leg vein are responsible for regulating the blood flow to the heart, but as the valves are weak, the residual blood remains in the lower leg causing edema of the feet.
Lymphadenopathy: Blockage in the lymphatic system results in retention of lymphatic fluid in the legs.
Investigation advised: Doppler study of leg. This study will reveal the condition of valve of the veins in lower leg.
It is always advisable to consult your doctor when you find edema in legs and ankles.
