What is Heel Pain?
Usually athletes and runners get painful heels. The pain occurs on the sides of the heel or at the bottom of the foot. Under repeated stress, small painful tears may develop. Tendonitis, bursitis, minute breaks in the heel bone or a bony growth on the underside of the heel bone are other sources of pain.
Symptoms of Heel Pain
- In the morning when you put pressure on your foot, there is discomfort.
- Things may worsen if you run or walk, otherwise the pain may ease as the day progresses.
Causes of Heel Pain
- Weight bearing activities like walking, running or playing tennis, stress the heel and causes pain.
- Obesity also stresses the heel.
- Abnormal walking gait makes the feet roll inward or outward excessively.
- With age the pads that protect the heel from injury may wear down and fail to provide shock absorption.
Home remedies for Heel Pain
- Take rest when your heel begins to hurt. Limit your activities, and be patient about the recovery as it may take months to recover.
- Massage your heel with a small jar filled with ice or use foot rollers.
- Go in for some stretches like calf stretch and heel stretch.
- After the pain has reduced, you can start daily activities like walking and running.
Preventing Heel Pain
- Shoes that have worn down heels and soles should be discarded. Buy new shoes that fit well, have shock absorbent soles and extra padding in the heels.
- Get your gait examined by an orthopedist.
- Obese should reduce.
- Avoid exercising on non-resilient concrete surfaces.

According to my opinion I suggest to all those who have this problem before going to take any medicine, you must have to go for lab work. Complete blood count. Uric acid (blood) calcium level (serum), heel pain sometime occur owing to ESR, calcium or uric acid level exceed the normal limits. So according to your symptoms take the medicine.
My mom has heel pain. She is obese but I don’t know what it exactly is and the doctor said that she would be fine eventually if she relaxes a bit more. But she is more into house chores than relaxing. The pain is too much and she does not feel it often. It’s just sometimes that it starts troubling her. Could anyone suggest some kind of remedy to prevent or to relieve pain for her. It would be of great help if anybody could suggest something that she could heal the pain even while standing/working.
I am 67 years old and running 8 km (jogging). I get heel pain which subsides after about 12 hrs. But with a little bit walking in shoes I am normal. I would like to know the use of special stocking which will reduce the pain while running/jogging.
It is very encouraging for the younger generation to see you jogging at this age. Were you a sports athlete in your young age?
Due to the age and due to your jogging, there will be lot of wear and tear of the ligaments of your foot joint. You may be complaining of plantar fasciitis, it is an inflammation of plantar fascia of the foot which keeps the arc of the foot in proper order. The other reason may be calcaneal spur, an extra bony growth in the calcaneous bone or the heel bone.
Heel pads and stockings provide absorption to the pressure and friction on the heels, making each step less painful. They also provide improved angle for the flexon of the foot.
The other alternative of jogging is swimming, here the heels will have less brunt to be borne, compared to jogging.
