Answer:

Swelling of feet and ankles is attributed to several causes. It depends on the age, sex, underlying medical condition, and family history of diabetes or hypertension or kidney disorder. The causes of swollen feet can be classified into two broad categories (local and systemic):

  • Local causes of swollen legs include trauma or injury or local inflammation, which will result in the swelling.
In such situation the swelling is associated with localized pain and redness. In addition to trauma the other causes of swelling will include arthritis, varicose veins, fungal or bacterial infection, nail bed injury, etc.
  • Systemic causes of feet swelling include conditions like congestive cardiac failure, deep vein thrombosis, hypertension, hypoalbuminia (low levels of albumin in blood), kidney disorders which result in excessive retention of sodium, Anemia, hyperthyroidism, etc

In addition to the measures practiced by you, you need to do the following to reduce the swelling in feet:

  • Avoid wearing tight footwear to heal leg swelling.
Please change your foot wear and wear comfortable shoes or slippers to reduce swollen feet.
  • Identify the cause of swelling in the feet. If it is due to deficiency of iron or hypoalbuminia (i.e. low proteins) correct the same.
  • Mild to moderate exercise will help relive the swelling and is also good for the heart.

My mom is 65 yrs old. Very much over weight, she has swelling in the legs-she gets weak quickly and
her heart bothers her more frequently. She is on medication and has taken several test: (liver, hearts etc.) Do you think it is because of her weight. Her eating habit is not at its best. No Dr. as yet has told her that she really should loss some weight. To get of fry, fatty and starchy food etc. She gets offended when I talk about weight. I lost 45 lbs. 5 years ago from size 18-size 14. I still have to loose 15 lbs. I know from experience how sickly and tired I was from being overweight. I had swollen legs from water retention. I am very concerned for her, please give some advice.

You are absolutely correct, reducing weight can solve many of your mother’s troubles.
As she has heart trouble, she needs to be careful with her diet. You must motivate her to reduce her diet and help her lose weight. Discuss and make her understand that eating fatty food will just worsen her condition. If you can start doing some light exercise with her to help her get started, she may get into the exercise habit. Also introduce some social work that may involve some physical activities.
Reduce her salt intake will help in reducing her swelling in the legs.
