Osteoarthritis is old age apathy. Osteoarthritis has beleaguered mankind for centuries. Historians claim the occurrence of osteoarthritis or other forms of arthritis in Greek and roman literature, and some even suspect caveman suffered from it.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis; the other forms of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Osteoarthritis affects middle aged and older people. It is a non inflammatory degenerative joint disease, characterized by breakdown of the joints cartilage. The exact cause of osteoarthritis is not known.
Possible Complications of osteoarthritis
Frequently we ignore osteoarthritis, calling it simply the ache and pains of old age.
- Destruction of the cartilage results into loosening of the tissue attached to the joint. This makes movement painful.
- There is effusion in the joint. Especially knee joint. Effusion is nothing but water in the joint. This causes swelling in the joint and mobility of the joint is decreased.
- Bleeding in the joint may be a complication of osteoarthritis.
- The resultant hematoma can cause infection in the joint.
- Pinched nerve in the spine is another complication faced by persons suffering from osteoarthritis.
- Stress fracture can result as a consequence of osteoarthritis.
- Stability of the joint can be affected due to rupture of the tendons and ligaments attached to the joint. It is an important complication of osteoarthritis.
