What Causes Tapeworms

Tapeworms are called as taenia solium in medical language. There are three kinds of tapeworms- pork tapeworm (taenia solium), beef tapeworm (taenia saginata) and fish tapeworm (diphyllobothrium latum). Common symptom associated with tapeworm infestation is mild abdominal pain, diarrhea and sometimes segments of the worm wriggling out of the anus.
Infestation is by eating raw or undercooked meat or fish. Once in the intestines, the worms mature and may reach 20 to 30 feet in length. Pork and beef tapeworm are the most common. Fish tapeworm occurs in areas where raw fish such as sushi are eaten.


Pork is extremely dangerous as the larvae of the pork tapeworm frequently burrow through the intestinal wall and travel around the body in the blood. Epilepsy and if they infect the eyes, blindness may result due to it.

How to Prevent Tapeworms

  • Food should be well cooked as it is mostly caused by uncooked food (beef, pork and fish).
  • Eat a diet high in fiber and avoid all sugary foods, including fruits, with the exceptions of figs and pineapples.
  • Eat garlic, onions, cabbage and carrots. They contain natural sulphur which helps expel worms.

Home Remedies for Tapeworms

  • Take two tablespoon of castor oil and for 24 hours eat nothing but light fruits and fruit juices.
  • Crush 10gms of pumpkin seeds, flavor with honey and eat it. At the end of one hour take 4 tablespoons of castor oil. One can take enemas along with this routine for better results.
  • Embelia ribes seeds are useful in removing tapeworms. Powdered seeds should be taken on empty stomach. Take 2 to 3 grams of powder with honey for taste. A suitable purgative should be taken after 24 hours of the intake of powder.
  • One to two grams of Moringa (drumstick) seeds is taken with water two times in a day for getting rid of tapeworms.
  • The glandular hair, found on the fruit of mallotus philippinensis (Monkey Face tree) are an excellent anti-helmintic. This can be used for all type of worms especially tapeworms. Two grams of powder should be taken with honey or curd. No purgative should be taken after this.
