Researchers at the Wisconsin university have been conducting clinical trials and investigations on Tibetan monks, to assess the impact that meditation has on the brain.
Experts say, the practice of meditation can change the workings of the brain and help people achieve different levels of awareness. They have stated that the left pre-frontal cortex is the place, where brain activity associated with meditation, is intense and powerful.
Richard Davidson, a neuroscientist, states that the meditation practice of the monks influences the brain in a tremendous way and the brain has the capability to be trained and physically modified.
These findings of the study have been carried out between Dr. Richard Davidson and his team, in association with Dalai Lama, a strong practitioner of meditation. The Buddhist practitioners have had a rigorous training for 15 to 40 years (10000 to 50000 hours). 8 monks volunteered for the research study, along with 10 other volunteers, who had no previous experience of meditation. EEG and brain scanning was performed. During the study, the subjects were asked to meditate upon unconditional compassion. In the monks the scans picked up fast moving gamma waves that were powerful, and better coordinated, than the gamma waves in the 10 volunteers.
Meditation requires a sustained and regular practice. It is a slow yet powerful practice which has huge mental, psychological, as well as physical benefits. In the initial phase of the practice, distractions and poor attention span are common. Gradually work up on the intensity and time period of the practice.
