In Biofeedback Therapy, automatic normal body-functions (involuntary) can be brought under our control with the help of electronic monitors that helps acquire voluntary control of that function.

Uses of Biofeedback Therapy

  • Control can be gained over automatic and unconscious physiological reaction through this specialized type of training.
  • It can reduce depression, anxiety and tension, combat fatigue and chronic insomnia, reduce attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity, overcome drug addiction and alcoholism, reduce chronic pain like headaches (both migraine and tension), arthritis and muscle spasms.
  • It helps to retrain, recondition and strengthen muscles after an accident, helpful in controlling abnormal heart rate and high B.P., helps overcome urinary incontinence; helps control bronchial spasms and reduces severity of asthmatic attacks.
  • Acidity, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, ulcers and other digestive disorders can be dealt with the technique.
  • In some cases it helps to reduce severity and frequency of seizures. Also used as a remedy for motion sickness and chronic constipation.

Treatment using Biofeedback Therapy

  • After a detailed questioning about your health, the therapist will apply sensors to those points of the body that needs treatment.
  • The electrodes maybe attached to fingers, hands, feet, scalp or skin.
  • The sensors are connected to any monitoring equipment that provides an instant feedback on the functions that we are trying to control.
  • Depending on the feedbacks, the therapist may teach mental or physical exercises that may solve the problem.
  • Some of the feedback instruments generally used are Electromyographs, Skin Temperature Gauges, Galvanic Skin Response Sensors, Electroencephalographs and Electrocardiographs (ECG’s).
  • Electromyographs – used to recondition muscle, relieve muscle stiffness and treat incontinence.
  • Skin Temperature Gauges – used in treatment of migraines, anxiety and high B.P.
  • Galvanic Skin Response Sensors – used to reduce anxiety.
  • Electroencephalographs – helpful in treatment of depression, head injuries, hyperactivity disorder and tooth grinding.
  • Electrocardiographs (ECG’s) – controls high B.P. and rapid heartbeat.
  • Treatment Time – 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Treatment Frequency – Usually 8-10 sessions are sufficient. But some, like deficit, hyperactivity disorder may take up-to 40 sessions. Therapist may suggest 3-5 sessions per week.

Benefits of Biofeedback Therapy

  • It helps in seeking control over specific measurable physiological reactions that have gone out of control.
  • It can prove especially useful for any disorder caused or aggravated by involuntary muscle tension or tightening.

Who Should Avoid Biofeedback Therapy

  • People with severe heart disorder or who use a pacemaker should consult your doctor.
