Soybean allergy is caused when your immune system mistakenly believes the protein present in soybean is harmful to your body. It then reacts by releasing histamine in your body to protect it. This chemical brings cascades of soybean allergy symptoms.
The immune system decides that soy protein is harmful for it, and thus generates specific anti-bodies. When you consume soy, the immune mechanism causes a release of certain chemicals, and histamine, to shield the body. These set off a cascade of allergic symptoms.
It is observed that not all soy products manifest allergic symptoms, if you have allergy to soybean.
It is unlikely for refined soybean oil to cause severe allergy symptoms, even if you are susceptible to soybean allergy. However those suffering from soybean allergy should check with their doctor before consuming products prepared from soy oil.
Soybean Allergy Symptoms
Symptoms of soybean allergy include
- Running nose
- Asthma
- Angioedema on face, lips and other parts of body.
- Urticaria
- Itching all over the skin
- Pain in abdomen
- Vomiting and nausea
- Conjunctivitis
- Eczema and dermatitis
- Anaphylaxis reaction occurs in certain hypersensitive individuals.
- Acne, atopic dermatitis and urticaria
- Rhinitis, runny nose, blocked nose and asthma
- Anaphylaxis
- Conjunctivitis
- Abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
- Fever
- Hypotension
- Fatigue and lethargy
Certain foods can have a cross reaction to persons suffering from soybean allergy, they are wheat, rye, barley, green peas, lima beans, peanuts etc.
Treatment and Diet For Soy Allergy
- When the symptoms are mild, no treatment is required; only steering clear of soy products will suffice.
- Serious allergy symptoms need anti-histamines drugs. They block the discharge of the histamines and ameliorate the symptoms.
- Occasionally, adrenaline injections become necessary, especially in cases of anaphylaxis.
- Experts also suggest stepping up the intake of vitamin C to strengthen and reinforce the immune mechanism and detoxify the system.
- To alleviate itching, ice application has proved to be highly beneficial.
- For healing of rashes, blotches and weals, aloe vera creams and gels are recommended.
Diet
- People with soybean allergy can eat bread without soy product, rice, barley, plain macaroni, fresh vegetables without soy ingredients, fresh or frozen meat or fish without prepackaged sauces or gravy, milk without soy product.
- They should not eat the foods containing flavorings, vitamin E containing products, vegetable broth and vegetable gum, hydrolyzed vegetable protein. Gravies containing soy products, candies and caramels made from soy flour.
- For effective management of the allergy, one must avoid soy and its various derivatives like tofu, miso, soy sauce, soy milk, soy yogurt, etc. Consume soy-free products only. It is also recommended that you avoid all foods that contain kidney beans, lentils, peanuts, etc.
